My computer was working fine until the new year, tried to
start it up and got a screen that said:
checking file sstem on C:
file system is FAT32
disks need to e checked for consistency
and then the machine went on forever slowly explaining
the % of the disk that was done.
It begins with suggesting hitting any key in 10 seconds
but if I do, nothing happens.

It never breaks out of the disk check screen - anyone
know what to do next?

What happened?

Same thing happened to me after using my new laptop over 3 months problem
free. After trying a bunch of stuff, finally I have decided to reinstall Win
XP. I hope you can figure out the reason and post it. Who knows, I may
encounter it later on again :(.
Good Luck,

i didn't get the point - does the system ever end disk check? do the
percents tick? is there hard disk activity

some disk checks take LONG time...couple of hours even...try waiting

In may case, I waited till the end of check disk. It took over an hour (40
GB). However, it stuck when it was %99 percent. During that time, disk check
found some files and "truncated" them (whatever that means). There was a
spin sound coming from the HD. HD got really hot ( I have acer TM800lci, HD
heating is common on this model, though). Since it did not end it, I hold my
finger couple of seconds on power button to turn it off and restarted.

This time, I tried skipping check disk. It hardly started. It was taking
ages even to start internet explorer. When I tried to restart, same check
disk screen appeared again w/ the same result. Could not start with the safe
mode either.

My solution was to reinstall the system w/ the supplied recovery disks.

I hope I wont experience same thing again...

solution: don't install windows on FAT :)
P.S. perhaps you should have waited a little longer on that 99th percent?
