I've been trying Tiny Spell. I think it's cool with the following
provisos:
Its "real-time" performance is sluggish on my Windows Me box.
That is, it's not instantaneous. It lags far behind my typing, so
I'm already six or seven words ahead of it when it beeps and goes
red in its tiny window. I'm a fast typist, so your mileage may
vary. I found that it hasn't been very useful to me while I write
because my train of thought is so far ahead of it that I'm
tending to ignore the beeps and plow straight ahead.
The program appears to be clipboard-based. To address your issue
of spellchecking a "highlighted section of text," I copied the
line above, "your mileage may vary" into Tiny Spell's window. It
was rendered "soyourmileagemayvary," which it couldn't deal with.
An advantage is that the program's window is really small, so
it's not in-your-face. Black words flash by in the window as you
type (in my case, lagging behind while it checks each one).
Mismatches turn red. Therepon a click gives you a list of
possible corrections; replacing the bad word with a good one is
instantaneous. In general, handling seems a little klutzy. So, on
the whole, I think that it's not-quite-ready-for-prime-time.
Now, I have to ask myself the question: if I were designing a
universal spell-check program able to work with other programs,
how would I go about it? Perhaps this is the only way to do it.
I hope I'm wrong. Then again, it's friendly and very unobtrusive;
it's hard not to like this program.
