Does anyone know of a spell checking utility that can check spelling
regardless of what application I am in, whether it is a browser,
notepad, word, email client etc?

Thanks!

"All-Purpose Spell Checker (APSC)
(Freeware) (Orphanware)
OS: Windows 95+
Languages: English (American)
Description: With APSC Spell Checker, spelling correction is made easy
for just about any document that you display on your computer. With
just a few mouse clicks, you can correct that spelling in your Web
mail, simple text editor, or anywhere where a spell checker is needed
that doesn't have one already!

so far, the easiest one I have seen is TinySpell
http://www.megspace.com/computers/tinyspell/

548kbs vs. 4.8mgs for APSC and quicker results. TinySpell works AS you
type instead of asking you to paste your text into a box. and notifies
you with a *ding*..then one click to ask it what's wrong and one more
click to choose among the suggestions. You can 'teach' it new words and
use it with or without a little window showing your current word.

I used to use Quinions "Spell Checker for Edit Boxes" and still have
THAT installed for doing entire documents.....

One I use that I found here is "WordWeb". Useable any program.

One I would like better would be one that tries to spell it phonically.

"WordWeb" is narrow minded in that if you have the second letter wrong in
trying to spell it, it will give every word using the second letter but not
experiment with a spelling trying a different second letter. A lousy
speller like me often gets the second letter wrong.

Franklin makes a hand speller that works that way. Anyone know of a
computer freebee like that?

Think I found one. It's called Fredal's Dictionary FD

All one line, of course. ^

I typed in fonics and it immediately came up with phonics. WordWeb wouldn't
do that. Wordweb will come up with every word known that starts with fo but
that's it.

Now it's your turn to help me. It put up a desktop icon but I've forgotten
how to drag it to the taskbar. Anyone?

I used that one for many years under Win3x and later Win9x.
Loved it. Designed for Win3x (16-bit), runs under Win9x, but
unfortunately does not run on the NT/2k/XP plattform.

Here is a message from the author Brian Quinion about current
status, copied from the homepage at:

Current status
Spell Checker is no longer under development, but remains
available for download. In particular, we do not now propose to
issue a 32-bit version for Windows NT/2000/ME/XP. It continues to
be supported, though pressure of time means that a response may
not be swift. The mailing list has been closed

Offers dictionaries for several languages, see homepage.

near end of page. UK and US English *language* dictionaries.

Five or six other freeware programs offered by the same author.

Finally, a *Browser warning* - from me:
If you browse the above site with anything but IE, like I did with
Opera, you might miss out on some textual information. In Opera I
noticed the page layout looked rather bad, so I knew something was not
right (an no difference if I told Opera to identify as MSIE6 or
Mozilla). Looking at the pages through IE and everything looks good,
all text (I assume) is visible and layout looks good.

All the best,
