Hi,

Here is my situation. My friend downloaded a non-genuine copy of Vista on my
computer. Since then the registration has expired as i didn't have a product
key, hence basically locking me out of my computer. I can use some files and
the internet with restricted and limited use.
Since then i have emailed and read that you can delete vista by
reinstalling your original program and for me that is XP professional.

I have since then tried finding my XP disc but i have conveniently misplaced
it. I have the product key on the bottom of the computer but no disc.

Does anyone know if i would be able to download the trial version for XP
professional from the microsoft website and burn onto a CD like it says. But
instead of using the product key they supply, would i be able to put in my
product key and have this as a real copy?
Will this affect my computer? will it work? will it uninstall vista?

Help!!! if anyone has any information it would be great.

You'll have to purchase your own "genuine" version of
Windows Vista and perform a "repair install". If you wish
to return to Windows XP, you'll need to purchase a "genuine"
version of Windows XP and perform a "clean install".

Hi Carey,

I want XP back on my computer not vista. I already own a genuine copy of XP
but i cant find my disc. I still have my product key though. Would it work if
i downloaded the trial xp version and put in my product key?

Would this proform a clean install?

Thank
Erin

Contact the computer's manufacturer to see about obtaining a
replacement CD. Otherwise, you'll need to find an unbranded, generic
OEM installation CD to use with your OEM Product Key, or purchase a new
license

If all you want is a time-bombed trial installation, you could do that,
I suppose. But it's not any sort of long term solution.

But

No, that wouldn't work. You'd be trying to use an OEM Product Key with
a Retail License.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any
retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice
versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version CD,
and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a retail
product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English CD.
Bottom line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.

Will this affect my computer? will it work?

You could use the Trial version CD to format the hard drive, but you'd
only have a trial version of the OS installed. You'd have to purchase a
retail license to upgrade the trial license to a permanent status.

will it uninstall vista?

If performed correctly, yes.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
