I am about to upgrade to XP and have a Norton Firewall
on my PC. I know that XP has a built in firewall.
Should I uninstall my Norton one before I upgrade or will
it not matter. I will disable the XP one once i have
installed the upgrade. i just doon't want to cause
problems with the upgrade itself. Any suggestions?
.
I had Norton Firewall on my PC and it slowed everything
down once I switched to cable. If you have more than one
firewall on your computer it confuses the PC so one or
the other will have to be uninstalled, especially to keep
the speed of your PC where it should be. If you really
want the Norton firewall you should uninstall it first
before installing XP and then reinstall Norton. It sounds
like a pain but I didn't know and it ended up causing
technical problems that took much longer to fix than if I
had known ahead of time to unistall Norton first. This
happened both when I switched over to cable and installed
XP. Hope this helps.

1st, to the original poster, XP's firewall is off by default. But it
wouldn't matter, you can just turn it off at any time. You still have access
to your computer if both were on, you just couldn't get in the Internet
successfully.

2nd, if you can, do a clean install. Some people have problems with keeping
their old stuff. I'd bet something like Norton firewall would have to be
re-installed anyway.

3rd, I hope your upgrade is worth it. If you have an old P3 or something, I
wouldn't do it. XP needs 256 MBs, and that's just a minimum (well I've heard
128 MBs minimum). But really you should have 512 - 1024 MBs RAM with XP.

If your system is old/slow, and you've got to pay for an XP upgrade, it might
be cheaper, well, it might be worth it, to buy a new computer with XP
installed on it and get the recovery disks with it. (A 2.5 - 2.7 GHz
Celeron, 17in monitor, jet printer, 256 MBs RAM, CD-RW & even DVD-R & 40 gig
HD for around $350 with rebates, can usually be found on sale at a major chain
every other week). (2.7 GHz = 2700 MHz).
