I have been googling for this problem for nearly a week,
so I really hope I am just entering the wrong search
terms and this will be simple.

I have 2 ATA drives in a hardware raid 0 (KK266R). I ran
a check disk and when the machine came back up,
everything seems to be in tact, but the file system reads
as 'unknown' and space and capacity are zeroed out.

I've got a notion that this will require some sort of
disk editor, but I have no idea what skills I will need.

Any guidance or direction is greatly appreciated.

Johan,

More than likely the MFT is corrupted but it could also be the boot sector.

The boot sector is the first sector on a volume and it points to the
location of the MFT. If the boot sector is corrupted, we're unable to mount
the MFT. Luckily, if you're using the NTFS file system....we have a backup
sector located at the last sector of the volume. You can use a utility
called Dskprobe to copy the backup boot sector to where the primary boot
sector resides. If the MFT is corrupted, you will need to use a third-party
data recovery utility.

If you'd like to call our Support Group for assistance, the number is
800-936-4900.

Hello,

9 out of 10 : boot sector for the partition is corrupt, if this is the case,
DiskPatch can normally fix this. Alternatively you can search the MS
knowledge base for 'ntfs backup bootsector' and fix this 'manually' using a
disk editor.

Jeff/All,

I used KB article 153973 to do just what you suggested.
I'm question if I followed the directions properly,
because there is no change to the "file system:unknown"
problem. I appreciate any further suggestions anyone may
have, but I do have two potential problems to point out.

1. The directions stated that there should be "Invalid
Partition Table" text at offset 8B, where dskprobe shows
an 8B four lines from the top, I see that text farther
down near a 61.

2. The version of DSKPROBE.EXE I am using is from the NT4
reskit.

I'm just at the point where I am having a bit of hard
time wrapping my brain around the concept of offsets,
relative sectors, and the difference between editing the
MFT or the boot sector. (any good RTFMs out there?)
