Unintentional file synchronization?

I recently purchased a new computer with Windows XP professional and MS Word
2000. My previous computer used Windows 2000. For some years I have
transferred MS Word files from office to home through a virtual desktop run
with Citrix software. I set up a virtual folder on the Citrix desktop that
corresponds to an actual folder on my home computer so that I can move files
from work to home. I then log off and open the MS Word files I have moved
to edit them. I have found, with my new computer, that I am unable to save
those files. I can click on the file menu and then on either "save" or
"save as" but nothing happens. I can close the file if I say that I do not
want to save the changes.

If I look at the files in Explorer using "Details" view I see that they
differ from other files in that they have a "status" attribute and this is
set to "online." If I copy this same file to my old computer I can open,
modify and save it in the usual way, again using MS Word 2000. For this
reason, I assume this is some new wrinkle with Windows XP that I have not
figured out. It seems almost as if I have activated file synchronization,
but I have not. Is there a way to remove the "status" attribute or reset
it?

Shot in the dark here (don't have Citrix), but have you tried
downloading the latest client software from Citrix and seeing if it
may help?

As it happens, I have learned more about my problem since I first asked my
question. Apparently, Windows XP routinely labels files as being "online."
I was able to save other MS Word files that were "online" without problem.
Conversely, throwing the offending files into a briefcase and making the
files "orphans" did not help the problem. In going over events that
preceded the problem, I recalled that there had been some kind of MS Word
message about delaying or not being able to do an "autosave." I
subsequently ran into a few messages in the MS Word newsgroups that led me
to think this might have been related to the problem.

Anyway, today, I went to "Folder Options" in the Control Panel and turned
off "Enable Offline Files" In MS Word, I disabled autosave. So far, the
files I transferred with Citrix today are saving normally. Thanks for your
help.
