Unintended Write-protection

XP Home updated to SP2. I've just taken on a USB2 External HDD which I
(foolishly) reformatted from FAT32 to NTFS. I can read from the drive as any
user, but I can only write to it when logged on as administrator: when using
my own User Identity I get a "write-protected" message. I can't get at the
problem through my computer>tools>folder options. Can anyone advise how to
'give myself permission' to write to my HDD??!!

TIA

Hi Bob I,

When I log on as Administrator, I can write to the USB E-HDD. When I log on
under my own user identity (which does NOT have administrator rights as a
security measure) I can't write (tho' when the HDD was FAT32, I could then
write - it's the re-format to NTFS that's done it!) What I want to do (I
presume) is to log on as administrator, and give my Personal Identity the
write-permission. And that's where I need the help.

TIA

In "Home" version I believe you will need to login in Safe mode to get
to the "security" tab.

Thanks Bob. May I trouble you further?? I had only a couple of days earlier
split out an 'Administrator' ID from my Personal ID so as to provide
additional protection from Spyware. I re-read your previous reply, and was
able (as Administrator) to restore Administrator rights to my personal ID,
which appears to have unlocked the write protection problem, so I infer that
it's the combination of limiting my personal ID AND reformatting to E-HDD to
NTFS which has caused the problem. I remain puzzled to know, however, why -
in my 'limited' personal ID - I can write to my Internal HDDs, but not to my
USB External HDD nor to my USB Flash memory.

If I log in in 'Safe mode', will I be able (quite specifically) make my
personal ID both 'limited' and 'enabled to write to USB devices'??

TIA

Phil

Unfortunately, my safe boot hangs at the load of mup.sys - and I can't get
round it by renaming mup.sys, since the system promptly creates a new copy
:(( So now I've got to do some more research........ AAAArrgh!
