If I leave computer on it will automatically make a
connection to my ISP--I use a modem, telephone line and
have Windows XP. How can I determine what is causing
computer to dial up ISP without my instruction. Thanks Tom

It is not easy to point out which application is trying to connect to
internet unless the title bar/message box say. You can examine the
taskmanager process very carefully and determine which is causing the
problem. In most cases, its spyware/trojan. Check msconfig startup items

Get and run these programs (if you test after each one you can stop when the
problem is gone):
Ad-Aware:

Once installed make sure to update via online before scanning!
and
SpyBot - Search & Destroy -

http://spybot.eon.net.au/
http://www.tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/
Once installed make sure to update via online before scanning!
and
BHO Demon: http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/bhod/

Until the problem is solved.

IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

or:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

Here's a recent response from Kelly to a similar question:

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top
toolbar)/Dial-Up Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all
locations and check off always ask me before auto dialing. Also,
Disable autodial while I am logged on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location
for which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

Disable or Enable AutoDial (Line 91)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

You can delete any TCP/IP addresses that you see under this key. Note
that AutoDial can use IP addresses, DNS fully qualified domain names
(FQDN), and NetBIOS names.
