The easy way - install Vista Boot Pro on the XP partition
http://www.vistabootpro.org/ open Vista boot Pro and remove the XP boot
files ( this will remove the OS select boot screen). Boot computer, open
disc management, format the drive where XP was installed.

Depends on where each os is installed, assuming by your post, XP is on drive
C, and Vista drive D.
What you can do, is boot off the Vista DVD, pick the "repair your computer"
option on the bottom left of the window
then pick command prompt, make sure that is your XP installation judging by
the folder structure, and files and what not.type format c: ( /q for quick
format )
then type exit, and use the startup repair option, and follow the prompts.
of course there is also the option to just run setup, format both drives,
and reinstall Vista from scratch,

Hi

when I start up I get an option to boot to either XP or Vista,
lable when I boot the OS I chose is on a drive called c: and the files on D:
are available
in explorer, but when I boot to Vista the D drive is the system drive, if
that makes sense.

I believe I cannot format because the Vista is an upgrade.

You can format, only if you boot off the DVD.
anything that is preventing you from formatting your C drive while running
windows, is because you booted off of it.
The program Format.com has nothing to do with licensing.

Thanks for your help

cheers
