Uninstalling Windows messenger

I have a problem in the small office I am managing: One of my employees is
spending a hours on the messenger systems. Each time I erase (during the
weekend) version 6.1 they reinstall it.

I can only seem to disable it by putting up the firewall on the XP system
(the person doesn't know how to turn this off as yet), but that screws up
the ethernet system stuff on which the office depends, slowing everything to
a crawl.

Either I find a programme or a system adjustment to cut out both the MSN 6.1
and Windows Messenger, or I shall have to fire a bright young employee.

I have a problem, does anyone have a solution ?

Depends how you are running your network, but why not restrict their user
rights so they can't install programs?

It's been a while since I've done network administration (back in the NT4
days) but I would imagine it's easy to do.

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I have not been
to "network administration 101", and therefore have
looked into the uninstall approach as being better
suited: I have found an uninstall command (RunDll32
advpack.dll,launchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove) but am wondering whether this
might impact my shared files system under ethernet, and
will wait for an answer on this before committing perhaps
the irrevocable ... computers are very complicated boxes,
and I am a little cautious !

Actually it's very easy under XP (I just checked).

All you need to do is limit the rights of the user, from Control Panel >
User Accounts. Under a limited account the user cannot "always install
programs", so I guess you can check whether Messenger can be installed.

I'm not a big fan of restricting user rights, but in the context of the
whole topic perhaps the guy needs at least one severe warning (from a
contractual perspective) coupled with removing the rights from his PC.
