Does anyone know why Windows Messenger is automatically
installed with Windows XP Home? Most Home users don't
know what it is, don't want it, and more importantly
don't like being exposed to the insurance racket of folks
sending in their ads for a program to stop the ads!

We have 680+ members in our computer club. Membership is
in a community of 55+ seniors that have no need for it.
Our home service volunteers are kept busy turning the
service off.

If should have been installed inactive. Those few that
want it can figure out how to turn it on.

Greetings Chuck,

The "ads" that you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows
Messenger which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor can Microsoft control
them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox. Removing "Windows Messenger"
will have absolutely no effect on them.

To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc" and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this.

Thanks for that. These pop-ups are getting worse by the day. They are now
coming on every 15 minutes (usually advertising software to eliminate
pop-ups!). Why does not Microsoft make it a bit easier to remove the
messenger. If you right-click on its taskbar icon and just try to exit.
there is a vague warning that you must first close Outlook, Explorer,
Express, etc. even though (on my computer) they ARE closed. One simply
gives up.

I have used MSN Messenger and subsequently Windows messenger to stay in
touch with friends since its inception.. what is it that some do not not
like about it?.. it is way cheaper than calling people by telephone..

UNINSTALL WINDOWS MESSENGER:

go to START
now go to RUN
cut and paste the command into the box
and hit OK...this will remove messenger completely!!
HERE IS THE COMMAND:

I have found that Microsoft has made it very difficult to
remove something that should be VERY easy to remove..I
have also found that even when disabled the program STILL
runs in the background. I have an open port program that
shows all activity on my pc...the MSMSGS.EXE is running
some garbage every two minutes...I would not be suprised
if it were some sort of spyware...why else would it be
running even after disabled..and why else would it be so
difficult to uninstall???

Good luck,

ASSASSIN
