| Hi,
|
| I also have win 2000 which has been come corrupted so I
| need to uninistall it possibly format the hard drive and
| reload it. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Depending on what 'corruption' you are talking about, you probably don't
need to do anything so drastic. Formatting the hard drive is going to wipe
out your data and applications, unless you have them on a different drive,
so you'll spend time reinstalling applications and retrieving data from
backups.
You could start off with attempting a repair installation first. This will
sort of upgrade your corrupted installation with a replacement from the
install CD and keep most of your settings. You'll have to re-apply Service
Packs and hot-fixes afterwards, though. You just pop in the install CD as if
you were doing a normal installation and, after NTDETECT and its friends
have done their work, it will notice that there is a current Windows 2000
installation and ask you if you want to repair it. You can use the set of
four Windows 2000 startup disks instead if you like.
Of course, your 'corruption' might be that you have boot problems - you
didn't say. In that case, you use the ERD (emergency recovery disk) to
either get the system back into a fit state or run the console from the
install CD. It is a cool idea (for next time) to actually install the
console so you have it available when needed.
Once you have the problem sorted out, it is probably worth considering how
the 'corruption' came about in the first place. Once correctly installed and
running, Windows 2000 is usually very stable and reliable unless you
encounter a hardware problem, and fatal hardware problems usually result in
a BSD (blue screen of death).
Do you know what has caused your 'corruption' ?
Kevin.
