Until today I have been able to remove the HP ZE2000 touchpad drivers so as
to uninstall the hardware, I reinstalled XP and cannot keep the drivers
uninstalled. Can anyone either tell me how to disconnect the touchpad or
uninstall it now?

Open Device Manager
Right click the device and select "Properties"
At the bottom, see the tag "Device Usage:"
Use the drop-down arrow to change from (enable) to (disable)

My notebook has a BIOS setting that allows me to disable the touchpad
there. When I disable it there, it never shows up in Windows.

If that option is available to the OP, it is certainly a more elegant
solution that the one I offered. :-))
