What is the best way of uninstalling hardware that has been removed?

[1] To remove all traces of a sound card that I've taken out

[2] XP re-installs USB devices if you plug them into another port. As a
result I've got a webcam that says it is #2, and a modem that is #3.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Clear the registries by running regedit.
Backup the registries first for just in case.
If you are not familiar with regedit, ask your friend who knows well to help
you.

Start/run/regedit
navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USB
click the Vid keys to find your USB device, delete the whole VId keys for
the USB device that have been removed from the system.
If you cannot delete the VId keys, right click on the VId keys, click
permissions and select full control and then click OK.

Hope it helps.

Peter
