Uninstalling Norton AV within Norton System Works

I've been using NAV and System Works for a number of years.

After reading here, I'd like to dump NAV and use Avast.

My PC is several years old, and System Works has helped keep me up and
running, so I don't dislike Norton at all, and I'd like to keep using
WinDoctor and SpeedDisk. (Unless there is another free program, like
Avast is, which might work better...

So how do I uninstall only NAV? It's bundled with System Works, and
there is no uninstall in my control panel add/remove programs except for
all of System Works.

I use Windows 98SE.

Thanks in advance

Use the Add/Remove for SystemWorks. When you're in the SystemWorks setup
program, you can choose to remove only NAV. It may be helpful to also run
the rnav.exe utility to insure there's nothing left behind. The utility is
available from the Symantec web site, but I think there are specific
versions of the utility depending on the version of NAV that you are using.
I did this over a year ago when my NAV subscription expired. I was using
CA's eTrust for a while and recently installed Avast. It should go fairly
smoothly for you.

I would suspect you can invoke the uninstaller for NSW and it will give
you an option as to which component(s)you wish to remove. I know that
can be done from at least NSW 2001 up through the present version
(2004). You may wish to confirm NAV is gone before you load a
competitive product.

Did you uninstall only the Norton Anti-Virus from SystemWorks and leave the
other programs. Did you then download Avast? If so, exactly what did you
do and how is everything working. My subscription to the virus definitions
ran out and I re-subscribed. It screwed things up the next time I booted
up - keeps freezing the computer. I'm using Win98 with SystemWorks2001.
Had no trouble until I re-subscribed to LiveUpDate. It not only screw up my
computer, but, on the Semantec web site, they say they no longer support
2001. Isn't that nice of them?
