I have reached about 90% of the uninstalling (indicator on bar) and the script says "Removing duplicate files" and it remains stationary
Checking the Task Manager shows the CPU being used 100% with 99% against "msiexexe"
Leaving it for hours does not finish the uninstall.
What is happening and how do I proceed please?

Symantec is notorious for making it difficult to work
with their software. They will give you a complete uninstall
procedure, starting with Add/Remove Programs....
Then, Search for all occurrences of "Symantec" which
you delete.....but be careful, because on my system
there was a folder "Symantec Shared" which, when deleted,
caused the "Search" function of XP to malfunction.
And there are a few places in 'registry' where they will
tell you to do the same.

If you post a query on their website, they will respond
to you within two days.

Thanks for your help. I have used a programme suggested by Symantec and it
has worked.
My system is now working 100% better!
Replaced it with AVG

Hmmm. Symantec have a tool called NoNav. It's a bat file that removes the
remnants of the application in the registry and allows a clean reinstall.
There are different NoNavs for different versions.
It has no guarantee by Symantec, but it got me out of trouble on 3 machines,
which just didn't want to install AV and just didn't work or just took
several hours to complete.
Get your tech support to send you the files.

Cheers
