So I called Norton who put me thru many more things, that did not solve the prob, said it was a Microsoft prob!! Well need I say more, Microsoft said it is a Dell prob. So here I am with NO internet security, and No answers. If anyone can Help please do!!!!

Why don't you uninstall Norton and install Kerio Personal Firewall,
www.kerio.com. It's just as good or better than Norton, uses much less
resources than Norton and it's free. And if you want a good virus program
that's also better then Norton, go to www.avast.com. It's also free. Make
sure you read the info on how to completely remove Norton's junk that's left
on your computer before installing it so you have no conflicts.

Why not call back Dell. Tell them you're fed up with their lack of
support and failing software you assumed would be problem free for a bit
longer than a month. Ask them for a return authorization number as
you're planning on returning their machine and continuing your search
for a system that's better supported and see what happens.

Also tell Dell you didn't receive your recovery disk, or instructions on
how to return your system to how it was when you purchased it.

Don't just hang up when someone tells you it's not their problem.

Since your operating system is an OEM, you will get no help from Microsoft.
Save yourself the aggravation and stop calling them. Here is what I would
do if I were you:

1. Uninstall Norton Internet Security. Use the Add/Remove Programs applet
or the Uninstall off the Start>All Programs>Norton menu.
2. Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 6.0.
3. Download Zone Alarm Free Edition.
4. Download Ad-aware 6.0.
5. Download the Google Toolbar.

All these applications are free and are very good. You do have one last
option left. You can do a Restore using the disks that came with your Dell.
This will restore the system to the state it was in when you first powered
it up a month ago. You will lose any data, so back up to a CD or Zip Disk.

If you do choose to Restore, you will have Norton Internet Security back as
it was when you bought the system.

It seems that Dell is not what they once were. I bought a Dell computer
about five years ago and at that time their customer service and their
computers were of high standards. Now it seems that their customer service
is severely lacking and their computers are not built with the same quality
as in the past. So, this time insted of buying another Dell, I built my own
and am very happy.

I agree with Jim, I would call Dell and demand they resolve the problem to
your satisfaction or you're sending it back.

You TALKED to Norton (Symantec) Support?

That's waaay more than I've ever got out of them.

When I have a problem with Norton Antivirus, I find it easier to reinstall the
OS. Just as easy as following the Symantec OnLine "Support" web maze, and a
hell of a lot more satisfying.

If I remember to repartition and reformat, I get a new years subscription for
LiveUpdate when I re install NAV. A small but appreciated benefit to compensate
for all the frustration.

if you are still following this, to uninstall norton you need to do
several manual things.

1) uninstall it using add/remove programs; reboot.

2) search your disks for any left-over trace files. use winkey-F and
search first for norton, then for symantec. toss any found top-level
folders into the trash. you'll find 3 or 4 of them, in Program Files, in
your user profile folder inside of Documents and Settings, and in some of
the other profile folders. Be sure to have "show all files" turned on in
folder options (ie, show hidden files). You especially need to trash the
documents and settings\allusers\application data\symantec folder.

3) reboot. double check that your disks are free of all norton and
symantec folders.

4) use system restore and create a restore point NOW. this is your safety
net in case you mess up the next step.

5) run regedit. press ctl-f and search the reg for symantec. delete all
keys (left pane "folders") you find that reference something (in right
pane) with symantec in it. repeat looking for norton. be sure to search
the whole reg (in left pane, select top most line, My Computer, and do
search).

CAUTION: if you are not confident in using regedit then DONT do it. Ask a
friend you trust who is. Since you used add/remove to uninstall it there
really should not be a lot of leftovers, but there will be some (that's
how it knows it's "already installed"). it's important that you strip out
these left-overs.

IF YOU MESS UP, use system restore to restore to the point you created in
step 4.

6) reboot; rescan the reg to make sure there is no ref to symantec or
norton.

Now, use system restore to create another restore point; call it "before
norton".

Then try reinstalling. [it may make yet another restore point
automatically; that's ok, but I'd use the one you made if it too goes
bad on you].

Good luck.
