uninstalling and installing video drivers windows xp

when I try to uninstall old video driver before
installing newly downloaded one in windows xp I am told
to reboot which ends up restalling the old drivers.
{Nvidia has recommended doing the unstalling first.)Do I
unstall the old driver and install the new before
rebooting?
