Hi,

I have windows 98 with a dual boot with windows 2000pro.
Currently they are both on the same physical hard drive.
I would like to uninstall windows 2000pro and reinstall it
on to its own hard drive. I dont care about anything that
is installed under the windows 2000pro, and would like to
start with a fresh install. The disk that I have is only
for upgrading. What would be the best way to go about this?

To do a clean install, either boot the CD-Rom or boot the Windows 2000 setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Thank you Dave. I think that will help a lot. After I
install win 2000 on the new drive, I can just delete the
old drive totaly? I also found this article but, was
unsure if it would apply in my situation.

If I were to go into the boot.ini file on my C drive
(windows 98) and delete the line about windows 2000, and
the delete my old windows 2000 from windows 98, would I be
able to install it from windows 98 as I orginally did and
get the option for dual boot?

Not clear what you mean? If you follow my instructions the drive would be
wiped clean. Are you wanting to keep win9x? If so are they installed on the
same or separate partitions?

You can boot with your Win98 startup disk and issue the command
sys C:
this will rewrite the boot sector, then you can delete these files boot.ini,
ntldr, ntdetect.com, bootsect.dos, pagefile.sys and possibly ntbootdd.sys
from the root of the System partition C:\., then you can delete the Windows
2000 boot partition.
