Peter

I've asked this twice in the IE7 group and no reply. After uninstalling IE7
my desktop favicons revert to IE7 generic "e" at every boot. I use TweakUI
to successfully correct it, but why is this happening? Anything I can do?

Hi Peter :-)
Thanks you Jan, but as my message says...I'm no longer a beta tester of
IE7...I give up!!

Ok...have you tried doing a System Restore to a date prior to the date you
installed the IE7 to restore your system to that previous state? Check to
see if you have a restore point prior to the time you installed the IE7and
if so, run the restore and see if that helps.

If not, check the information below:

Favicons
http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Favicons

and ....

The Favicons are stored in the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) and disappear
when they expire out of TIF or TIF is cleared.
and….

Icons are temporarily stored in a file called iconcache.dll, You might try
deleting this file and restart your computer, Windows should automatically
rebuild the iconcache.dll on reboot. Be sure to make a backup copy just in
case.

Once you get your Favicons working again, try the following to preserve
them:
FavOrg: To save Favicons - Free
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Bookmark-Managers/favorg.shtml
This allows you to save them permanently in a different folder and
re-associate your favorites with the stored icons. It also verifies whether
your links in Favorites are still good.

But....if all other efforts fails, you may just have to do a repair of your
IE6 in order to get it back up to speed. I am not an advocate of arbitraily
doing a repair, but, when nothing works, then Here is how to do that:

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
If you have SP2, follow the instuctions in the SP2 section:

Hope this helps.

I did. It's strange, I can't see the IE7 icon anywhere in the system.
TweakUI restores the correct ones every time and in fact, if I right-click
the affected ones and go to Properties...the correct ones are already
showing there...weird.
I also use Favorg anyway, but my Favorites weren't affected, only the
desktop at boot up.
I'm not going to do anything right now because I'm busy trying to change a
domain over at Yahoo Domains...which in itself is a total pain in the
you-know-what.

Gotcha. Post back if you still need help. I think that you may need to
create a new Cache.

For XP follow the instructions at Mike Burgess' site as the process and
paths differ from W98:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)

Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder and reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)
Example: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

If that does not work, then I suggest that you do a repair of the IE.
Uninstalling IE7 may have bodged something royally and you need to just
repair the IE altogether. After I uninstalled the IE7 Beta 2 my IE was
really doing wierd thingies, and I tried everything to no avail. I finally
had to just repair it. All is working fine now. :-)

Well Icleared everything out, temp files, cookies - everything...and they

I think I'll just bear with it until the next time I format/reinstall, which

But....if all other efforts fails, you may just have to do a repair of
your IE6 in order to get it back up to speed. I am not an advocate of
arbitraily doing a repair, but, when nothing works, then Here is how to
do that:

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
If you have SP2, follow the instuctions in the SP2 section:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378#XSLTH3130121123120121120120
The section Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install
Internet
Explorer 6 works on earlier versions of Windows.

Hope this helps.

Hi Peter :-)

comments and/or
questions related to that beta and you will be here better answers if
you post there.

I've asked this twice in the IE7 group and no reply. After
uninstalling IE7 my desktop favicons revert to IE7 generic "e" at
every boot. I use TweakUI to successfully correct it, but why is
this happening? Anything I can do?

Well Icleared everything out, temp files, cookies - everything...and they
are still here at reboot.
I think I'll just bear with it until the next time I format/reinstall,
which will no doubt happen sooner, rather than later! ;-)

More than likely. I had to repair my IE after I uninstalled the IE7 Beta.
It was just not going to work right no matter what I tried.

Hi Peter :-)
I tried the System Restore...no go I'm afraid. I'll look into this other
method. Thanks ;-)

Let up know how you do. If you need assistance, post back.

Also...it is always a good Rule of Thumb to create a restore point before
you do any updates, even Windows, and before installing any program. At
least you stand a chance of having a system Mae West if needed. <g>

Hope this helps.

Hi Peter :-)

Thanks you Jan, but as my message says...I'm no longer a beta tester
of IE7...I give up!!

Ok...have you tried doing a System Restore to a date prior to the date
you installed the IE7 to restore your system to that previous state?
Check to see if you have a restore point prior to the time you
installed the IE7and if so, run the restore and see if that helps.

If not, check the information below:

Favicons
http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Favicons

and ....

The Favicons are stored in the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) and
disappear
when they expire out of TIF or TIF is cleared.
and..

Icons are temporarily stored in a file called iconcache.dll, You might
try deleting this file and restart your computer, Windows should
automatically rebuild the iconcache.dll on reboot. Be sure to make a
backup copy just in case.

Once you get your Favicons working again, try the following to preserve
them:
FavOrg: To save Favicons - Free
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Bookmark-Managers/favorg.shtml
This allows you to save them permanently in a different folder and
re-associate your favorites with the stored icons. It also verifies
whether your links in Favorites are still good.

But....if all other efforts fails, you may just have to do a repair of
your IE6 in order to get it back up to speed. I am not an advocate of

You /posted/ twice about this, in one thread in IE General, barely 5 hours
ago. Allow 24+ hours for a reply in any newsgroup, especially one as busy
and hysterical as IE General is currently. We're all volunteers, with the
exception of some of the Softies who are currently checking IE General from
time to time. (Don't get used to it.)

Actually, yours is not an IE question at all but a WinXP question. Try
posting to WinXP General newsgroup, or see http://snipurl.com/m7wa.

I'm fully aware that you are volunteers, and I volunteer my help in all
these forums too, but the post in General was the 3rd such post over several
days and I noticed most others were being answered.
Forget it I'll put up with it.
Thanks Jan for the help. I wont attempt a repair of IE as it isn't
explained clearly enough for me what one has to do exactly.

You're very welcome, Peter!

Good luck in getting your problem resolved soon. Sorry I could not be of
more help.
