I installed my XP Pro on my daughters computer, which I
guess I should have not done. Had problems with my main
computer and I had to reinstall XP on it. Now I can't
activate it unless I purchase another License or uninstall
XP on my daughters computer. Question is, can I but XP
Home and install it in place of XP so that XP pro will
register only on one computer?

Huh?

I had XP pro installed on my main computer. My daughters
computer was running 98 and had some adware problems, so I
wiped it and installed XP Pro on it and registered it.
Over the last several days I had problems with the main
computer and Had to reinstall XP Pro on it. Now I can't
register the XP on my main computer. Called the telephone
number in the activation page and the rep told me that I
had 3 options, 1. buy another copy of xp pro and install
it, 2. buy another license, or 3. uninstall xp. Well you
can't just uninstall xp pro if you have only 98 se to go
back to, so I was thinking about getting xp home for my
daughters computer and trying to put it on instead of xp
pro. my question is would that work?

Yes you can remove XP Pro from your daughter's computer and replace it with
XP Home. You can't install XP Home overtop of XP Pro though so you need to
do a clean install of Home on her system. If you still have your daughter's
Windows 98 SE CD then you can purchase the XP Home Upgrade version which is
a lot cheaper than the full version. With the Upgrade version you can do a
clean install as it will ask for a qualifying product part way into the
beginning of the clean install. Just pop the Windows 98 SE CD into the drive
to satisfy the request and away your go.

Once you have removed XP Pro from her system you can activate it on your
system. The Activation Center will require a phone call but simply explain
that you are transferring the license from the system it was on, that you
have completely removed it from your daughter's system and you now wish to
activate it on your system.

....

I have computers with XP Home, XP Pro both with Office Pro 2003 (there are
several users in my household). My oldest computer has Windows 98 (not SE) and
Office Pro 97.

Although the Win 98 machine has less memory (384 vs. 512MB) and a much slower
processor (PII-350 vs. P4 1500Mhz and faster), the Win 98 machine seems much
faster and is my favorite. The XP machines don't do anything better than Win 98
for me, although I plan to use the XP Pro encryption feature. Office 97 handles
all the Excel, Word and PowerPoint stuff that comes my (or the other household
users) way.

So I suggest Win 98 SE is not such a bad thing. All these boxes connect to the
Internet via router, and to each other with Windows peer to peer networking.

Thanks for your help, that makes it alittle easier to
digest anyway.
