I am running Windows Vista Ultimate and Microsoft Defender is installed by
default. I want to uninstall it but it doesn't even show up in the Programs &
Features list (Uninstall or change a program). How do I go about to uninstall
that program.

thank you

Is there a reason why Windows Defender doesn't seem to be keeping up with all
the other spyware/malware programs? (Main reason for wanting to uninstall it)

Seems like the new attacks as well as some old established programs are
slipping past detection on the PC's here. We are using a couple of the free
apps that have been around for a while to clean up most, and formatting those
that we don't want to waste time on.

No anti-spyware program is perfect, and each is able to detect malware
that the others don't for that reason, it's wise to run several.
Windows Defender may not be the single best such product out there,
but it's far from useless, and I recommend *not* uninstalling it.

Perhaps if those who use it opted into to Spynet and/or submitted
malware samples more frequently, WD would be more effective ?
The folks I know who work in the WD Program Group are dedicated malware
fighters and would appreciate more malware submissions so that WD can be
as effective as possible.
As Ken stated, no security software is 100% effective.
WD is just another tool to use.

Aside: The data garnered from the monthly release of the Windows
Malicious Software Removal tool has been effective in bringing down or
seriously hampering known botnets and data harvesters:
