I bought laptop (gateway) with windows 2000 professional
operation system. It is locked by a password request. I
do not know it. I cannot get into the computer. What can
I do to uninstall this operating system and reinstall
another one.

the command is format C:

however if you will be installing XP
just boot with the cd and format the drive from the context of the
installation

With a little hope, try logging on with the user
name "Administrator" and the password of "password". Then
set up your user account. Also try contacting the former
owner before you do something drastic and have to install
all the drivers for the laptop.

If you want to start over, DOS disks won't help you much.
Most laptops have a recovery CD, but it will usually wipe
everything out. However, it will have all the drivers you
need. If you do your own installation, you'll have to
figure out the hardware drivers to use.

Manually, use the installation disk that came with W2K or
create setup disks from the BOOTDISK directory on the CD
and run MAKEBOOT.EXE. This way, if you reinstall, you can
save all your data files without wiping out the hard
drive. But you will still have to install drivers and
software again.

In any case, if you reinstall, visit the Windows Update
site afterwards. You'll have plenty of updates to install
there.
