Ok this may sound odd but I'm trying to downgrade a
computer from win2000 to win98 but for the life of me can
not figure out how to uninstall win2000 pro so I can
install that. That or restart in dos mode so I can run
win98. I'm familiar with dos, being old enough to
remember using it before windows, but it's been so long
since I used it that I forgot how to run around in it.

thanks!

You can't uninstall the OS. Boot to your Windows 98 CD and reformat the
drive and start the install as though it's a new empty hard drive.

Why do you want to go back to 98? Any particular reason? I'm just curious,
since W2K would kick Win98's ass in all fights. (Unless you start
discussing games and other such nonsense, in which case I would say, "If you
want to play games, get an Atari, not a computer." But that's just me. [:)

Not to mention the End of Life (EoL) for Win98 is just weeks away !

Reformat which drive and how? I know I've been at this
too long since my brain has decided not to work like it
used to as far as stuff like this goes, so please humor my
swiss cheese memory (which desperatly needs to be defraged
btw).

As for why I want to go back, we're running an ethernet
network here at work and it seems like it's been one
headache after the other ever since we upgraded the one
computer to 2K. The puter is refusing to reconnect to the
network (which is how we all connect to the net as well),
yet it was working fine before hand. I'm sure it's the
harware because I had problems trying to upgrade my puter
(here at work which is the same as the one in question
which was built by someone that worked with the previous
owner) and so to make things easier on everyone, we just
want to go back to the previous OS. I have 98 on mine and
don't have any problems with it and the network.

So basically we've gotten fed up with it and want to go
back. If we didn't have all these problems and didn't
need to get onto our network, then I'd leave it.

Boot to your Win 98 CD at the A: prompt type in Fdisk option 4 displays the
partition information. If it is NTFS you will need to delete the Non-Dos
partition and crate a new primary Dos partition. Reboot the machine again
with the CD change to the D:\win98 and format c: then load 98.

Agree with the others, a bad move. To wipe the drive, some ways include;
boot a win98 startup disk, run fdisk and delete all partition information
found (as long as NTFS is primary). Or boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup
disks and when you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other
partitions found, then abort the install. Or use a utility named delpart.
Once removed you can partition and format the drive as you wish. Boot the
Win98 CD-Rom or restore CD-Rom to start your install.

I'm guessing the failed install (or other issue) was the result of an
upgrade. Upgrades almost always fail.
