i had xp pro on my pc and decided to install vista, i did the upgrade option
so i could leave all my files intact but now i want to go back to xp pro. Is
there any way of doing this without having to format the harddrive and do a
clean install? thanx for any help.

No, there is no downgrade path from Vista to Windows XP.
Save all important data and perform a Clean Install of Windows XP.

when i restart my pc i have the boot options of vista or earlier versions of
windows, if i select earlier versions of windows and press enter will it boot
from xp pro? thanx

If that option is there, and you installed Vista on another hard drive or an
other disk parition, probably, as long as you didn't delete XP.

If you remove Vista you remove the ability to hit that menu, it's part of
Vista's boot process.

You need to go into your BIOS and set it to boot from the CD first. Then
insert the XP CD and save and exit the BIOS. To get into the BIOS, it's
usually F2 or Del. Look at the screen carefully when it first boots and
see what it says about "set up".

No, if it is a restore cd then it may not be bootable and he might have to
hold down the F11 (or something) while booting. My thought is that
installing Vista wiped out the enabling code the manufacturer put in the mbr
for that. Some mfg's have a downloadable tool for restoring the mbr so that
restore system works again.

My thought was that he was trying to run the XP CD's setup from
within Vista, not knowing to enable bios to boot from the CD.
I didn't know that some OEMs don't make their restore CDs
bootable. Thanks for enlightening me.

You're welcome.

btw, I have had manufacturers' restore cd's that contained nothing but a
ghost image file and the software to restore it.
