I have been told to try to Uninstall then Reinstall my modem and that might
correct my current problem.

Here are some details: my modem and dial-up connection had been working just
fine. I checked-in to a hotel where, for whatever reason, the telephone was
not usuable by a computer. Instead they offered a D-Link Wireless Broadband
card for me to install in my computer. Unfortunately, they mistakenly gave
me the wrong software (DSL-302G) and, when I realized this, I cancelled the
setup process. They then gave me the right software (DWL-G650+) which I
installed, used the broadband connection with no problem (after enabling
WEP) then I uninstalled that software.

Since then, my dial-up connection appears to work as normal except that the
step "Registering your computer on the network" takes a very long time and
also disconnecting takes a very long time and, most important, there is no
access to any web page and Ping tests fail even though the status of the
modem is Connected and Working.

A possible fix might indeed be to delete all Dial-up Connections, uninstall
the modem drivers, then reinstall the modem drivers. I think this should be
a fairly straigthforward procedure using my Windows 2000 Pro.

I just need some confirmation that this might indeed solve my problem and
that it is truly a simple thing to do.

If modem works the drivers are okay.
Tune up dial-up connection properties, 'cause you shouldn't register the
computer on the network in case of regular dial-up to ISP. Long delays and
failed ping may by the symptoms of incorrect TCP/IP settings, mostly DNS IP.
After successful dial-up open Command Prompt and run 'ipconfig /all'. The
output should confirm whether you get public IP, GW, and DNS from the ISP or
not. Post the results if you'd need more help.
Odds are that winsocks are screwed up as well.

Thanks for your interest and your suggestions (which I sort of
understand...).
Below are the results of the ipconfig on the computer that does connect and
on the one that does not. I see some differences but I sure don't know what
they mean. If you could interpret, that would be great. And perhaps you
could suggest what to do to correct any bad settings.
As to the winsocks, how do I check those??

As you see, W2k computer doesn't get public IP thru dial-up (WAN)
connection. Autoconfiguration aka APIPA is a feature of W2k TCP/IP that
automatically configures a unique IP address from the range 169.254.0.1
through 169.254.255.254 and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 when the TCP/IP
protocol is configured for dynamic addressing and a Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is not available.

OTOH, computer receives DNS servers IPs and you continue with TCP/IP
reinstall.

How to repair network or modem connectivity issues in Windows 2000

Thanks, it looks like the Microsoft Support document that you suggested
should take care of the problem. However, it tried it and have a small
glitch: at the step of Uninstalling the TCP/IP, I got the following error:

Could not uninstall the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component. Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) is still required by the following component(s) and cannot
be uninstalled until those components are uninstalled: Simple TCP/IP
Services

Do you know how I can uninstall the Simple TCP/IP Services??

Thanks again.

You uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs/Add/Remove Windows
Components/Networking Services.

P.S. Looks like the system is completely screwed up - I've rarely seen the
needs to install these services.

OKAY SYSTEM BACK TO NORMAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot for your help Jetro. I REALLY appreciate it.
