Hello,
I have tried to remove this programm from my PC but no luck... I can't find
it in add/remove programs or in the windows components. It's shortcut is
right in my Programs on the start menu.

I need an easy way to permanently remove Movie Maker from my computer.

Please help,

Thanky you

go into start/my computer/(select your hard drive)/programme files
then delete it if you're really desparate

The files reappear after a minute or so. It has to be done through registry
or some other tool. It appears that Microsoft has rigged it as some integral
component (while it is not) and something particular has to be done to remove
it.

you have to remove it in safe mode.

my wmm stopped functioning. many wmv and other video files couldn't be
imported - got unspecified error. and couldn't drag other video files to
storyboard. couldn't install it because ( as you learned), it's nowhere in
the add and remove programs list.

now i can't download it or install it. ms only makes it available as part
of sp2, which i have, so i'm trying uninstall and then instal of sp2.

don't understand why this has to be so difficult.

It stands to reason then that if WMM 2 is part of SP2, uninstalling SP2 will
remove WMM 2.

Actually, it is possible to remove it. There is a tool called XPlite, and
when you install it, there is an option to remove Windows Movie Maker. When
it uninstalls, it opens sysocmgr.exe and de-installs it like it would Games
and MSN Explorer, etc.

If anyone knows how to automate this so I don't have to use XPlite, I'd
really appreciate it. I know once you use XPlite, additional entries appear
in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OC
Manager\Subcomponents - one of which is MovieMK.

I tried creating a text file with the following content:

[Components]
MovieMk = off

And then running sysocmgr.exe, but it didn't work.

I would agree with Papa John that for the amount of space it takes up, it's
not worth messing with the system. I don't like this program at all and
wanted to uninstall it, and came across the same problems--wasn't listed in
add/remove programs, if I deleted it off Program Files it would reappear,
etc. I wasted almost an hour of my life dealing with this frustrating process
and after reading all the threads about this and taking a look at a website
or two said, "forget it." You CAN delete certain elements of MovieMaker off
Program Files. Most helpful space-wise are the two sample images which each
take up some 45 KB or so. Don't delete anything with the weird letters and
logo resembling a wrench and screws. Just delete the images, help (read-only)
docs. Personally I would stay away from tinkering with the internal
structures of things. It is annoying, yes, but not worth screwing something
else up with your computer to alleviate this minor annoyance.
PS: If you want a good movie-making program, try Pinnacle. Like any of these
types of programs, it might fall prey to trip-ups here and there, but it is
incredibly user-friendly, far better than either Movie Maker or Nero.
