Uninstall question

I have my cousin's notebook, a Samsung N130, which came with XP Home, SP3
pre-installed.

She wants to remove IE8 and use IE7 instead (as the former refuses to retain
login info).

Neither IE8 nor SP3 appear in the add/remove programs list, so I can't get
to it that way, and when I run the command line
"C:\Windows\\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe" it comes back with "the system
cannot find the path specified".

I've run a basic XP repair from Samsung's pre-loaded utilities, but to no
avail.

Is there any other way to do this? Or is it not possible because of the
original XP/SP3 installation?

Are you certain? It shows up on mine, but in a slightly unusual spot,
"Windows Internet Explorer 8," not in the "Microsoft ..." block.

Sorry, what I should've said is, IE8 is listed in the add/remove list, but
there is no option to remove it when highlighted.
Apologies.

Could it be that your cousin deleted some rollback files to save space on
the disk? I don't know, because it has been a while since I have had access
to Windows XP, but it seems reasonable that a "Disk Cleanup" operation might
have removed the necessary files to roll back to IE7.

She reckons not... the notebook belonged to a young niece of hers until
recently. My cousin runs IE7 on two other computers & prefers it to 8.

Hi, yes, I saw that; but SP3 isn't on the add/remove programs list,
either! Today, I ran the command line in this article -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249 and it still won't shift, an error
states that "...(command line) refers to a location that is unavailable.
It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network... etc.."

I think because everything is on the notebook's one system disk, it can't be
done.

Do you know exactly what is happening with IE8 "not retaining login info"?
Does that mean user name and password info is not being retained by IE8 for
certain web sites, or somewhere else within Windows? Most sites require
cookies to be accepted in order to retain that info; maybe she has those set
to "block". I've been using IE8 for some time now, and have had no login
problems at all (except for Bank of America's site, and I have problems on
it with IE7, IE8, and IE9).

The only other removal suggestion I can think of is to download and
reinstall SP3, then uninstall it (if it'll let you). I don't know if you'd
have any success installing SP2, but that might work, too.

Her main gripe is with Facebook, IE8 never remembers her login details,
whereas IE7 (which she rolled back to on her other PC & laptop) always does.
I can't speak for the Facebook login on my own IE8, because I'm not a
member, but I have noticed that compared to say, Firefox, fewer of the
'remember me' tick options seem to work.


I never gave cookies a thought, and I just returned her notebook to her
tonight - I'll check that out, thanks.

Try to convince her to use the latest version of FireFox (6.0, I believe)
Much less hassle than trying to uninstall IE-8 and put in 7.
8 should work for her without a problem, if it is set up properly.
