I've bought a 9600XT card as a gift and we took a Geforce card out just to
make sure that the ATI worked ok. It does so it's back in the box for now
and the Geforce is back in. We removed the control panel and the drivers
(4.3) using the control panel but even though we have reloaded the GF
drivers, all games crash pretty soon after starting. I've seen comments
about people finding it hard to get shut of the ATI drivers. Is this the
case here and if so, what's the way out ?

Thanks

You're correct, Kev; an ATi uninstall doesn't remove the drivers properly.
The same is, apparently, true of the NVidia drivers, and the software of
many other hardware and software producers (I can recall an horrendous
experience removing Roxio stuff...).

Go to http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html and
download and run cat-uninstaller.exe. That seems to be pretty effective at
cleaning ATi software and drivers from your system. It mostly removes
registry entries and the ATi files in your System folder; this should be
enough to effectively clean your machine. if you want to be really
thorough, delete the ATI folder on your C: drive and any ATI folders in
Program Files, then do a search in your Windows folder for ati*.* and delete
all those, possibly excepting internet files and the like. There is also
one registry entry that stays in one of the RUN keys that's best removed,
though carefully (don't mess with your registry unless you have a good idea
what you're doing!).

But cat-uninstaller should sort you out well enough.

but how do you remove the ATI-MMC directory with the subdirectory USERNAME
?
it is hidden en write protected and even with administrator rights it can't
be done
I think when reinstalling after done the cat-uninstaller this directory may
cause problems
I would be glad to know how to remove this ATI-shit

effective and good

that also I had tried in XP safe mode : command mode in good old dos ;)
it was not accepted to manipulate the attributes
Nick

you cannot change the attributes from dos? never ran into that
before. are we talking 'long file name' problem here?

correct.
and it's a short filename and I can't get a look in the directory. access
denied:(
I think ATI has put something in this directory which avoids to RE-install
ATI-stuff correctly.
in the registry I can't find also a reference to this directory
tia, nice some one is thinking with me
