[operating systems]
signature(f673f673)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
many thanks in anticipation

Are you refering to two separate hard disks? Are the files boot.ini,
ntldr and ntdetect.com on the Windows 98 FAT32 partition? If yes then
boot with your Windows 98 setup diskette and at the prompt issue:

SYS C:

Your computer should now boot directly to the Windows 98 installation.
You can safely delete the following files from the root folder:

Ntldr
Ntdetect.com
Boot.ini
Pagefile.sys (if present)
hiberfil.sys (if present)
Bootsect.dos

You can use appropriate tools to remove/recreate/reformat the NTFS
disk/partition.

Go to Bootdisk.com and download a Windows 98 boot disk, or boot to your
Windows 88 installation and create a boot diskette from there.
http://search.microsoft.com/results...0=Search&FORM=QBME1&l=1&mkt=en-US&PageType=99

After you create the diskette go in the BIOS and set the computer to
boot to the diskette drive first then boot the computer with the
diskette in the drive.
