Hi,
After 'banging my head against the wall' for the last couple of weeks, I
was wondering whether you could help with the following, please.

I'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and
Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic
Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is
through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card
installation.

My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and
functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows
this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to
either the other computer or broadband connection.

Within my limited knowledge I've done all the usual stuff, including turning
off both firewalls and antivirus.

So here we are with each machine happily doing its own thing, but flatly
refusing to speak to one another! : )

It's got to be something 'right under my nose' and stupidly simple, but
I would be REALLY grateful for any help that you can offer.

Thanks,
Kinetix

hi, Kinetix

The problem that you cannot connect with other computer is thata you
are using a APIPA IP address Automatic Private IP Adddress. This happes
when your computer trys to find for a DHCP server (Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol Server). What you need to do is Either setup a
DHCP on your Router or Server. Or use a Static IP address on all
computers in the same IP range. To way to do this one using the gui toll
which you said didnt work. so you can try this in command line

netsh interface ip set address name=" Local Area Connection 2" static
192.168.0.100 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1 1

192.168.0.100 is your ip address
255.255.255.0 is your subnetmask
192.168.0.0 is your defult gateway (your routers interface)

tha above is just a example you can use any range that you want

Hope this helps

Cheers !!

Hi John,
Thanks for the advice, but I haven't been able to resolve the problem.
Having tried various combinations of static ip addresses (and DHCP) on both
computers, I finally decided to try the registry entry that you suggested,
but got the message " The requested operation requires elevation".
Help! : )

Hi John, I followed your instructions to the letter, but zilch. So restarted
- still nothing. Went into LAC2 Properties and reset from Static to DHCP, and
network icon disappears from Network window, while identifying kicks-in in
Network+Sharing, but after 14 minutes still fails to 'connect'.
Went back into LAC2 Properties and reinserted:
192.168.0.100 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.0
and icon reappears in Network+Sharing, and overall it's still classified as
being connected to an unidentified network.
Just to reiterate: 2 computers, 2 cards and an ethernet cable - nothing
else, and 'mechanically' everything showing as AOK!
Have included the latest print out. Hope that you've got something else up
your sleeve : ) Thanks, Kinetix
