We are trying to use alt 251 which in XP creates the symbol for square root
but doesn't work in Vista - we get a small 1 as used for referencing
material. Does anyone know how to get this to work?

thanks for any help

Not sure what you are suggesting to do. Are you suggesting that we alt
+221A or √? Tried that and it didn't work. If you are suggesting
another way please explain.

In XP we can type alt 251 anywhere - word, notepad, emails, search engines
and get the square root symbol, which is what we need to be able to do in
Vista.

√ = Square root
✓ = Check mark

Although Alt-251 does look like a check mark, it is actually square root
symbol.

For simplifying U+ code entry...

Launch the utility, then with the text editor in focus, hit Alt-keypad+.

For example, square root is U+221A. Just type 221A and hit the send button
to the document you're working on.

What browser are you using? I tried IE 8.0 and Firefox 3.5.3. You might
try opening Notepad and copy paste.

AS I indicated we wanted to be able to use the quick alt 251 for square
root rather that copy pasting etc. We also wanted to be able to create the
square root in various applications - word, notepad etc. none which will
allow alt 251 even using MS Word 07 causes the small raised 1.

Maybe you can use a keyboard programmer to run a macro that places the
desired character at the typing cursor. Then you only have to copy and
paste once, i.e., to place it in the macro.

Alt + 251 works for me for this mark on Vista, BUT the font used must
support that character at that number, and many do not. The
Vista-supplied fonts Calibri and Candara do give this symbol from Notepad
with Alt + 251 . Some of my old TrueType fonts work with it, others do
not.

So, try using a Vista font
