I Like to use a separate box to read the questions & answers in outlook
express. On some
but not all, at the top of the popup box, Where the question is, there is a
space, then the words-
Unicode-(UTF-8)........What does this mean? Even as I write this, There is
a Unicode-(UTF-8)
at the top of the box. Is this normal? Or do I have something set up
wrong?......Had to reformat this
machine about 3 months ago,And I don't remember seeing this before the
format......
Any
ideas?.........................................................Thanks,..Butc

Unicode is a text standard. Originally, English speaking folks designed a
character system that held 7 bytes of information per character (later
expanded to 8, to match a full byte), which works great on a language with
26 characters, but fails miserably once you start considering all of the
languages of the world. So, they came up with Unicode, which can store
characters from every alphabet in the world in two bytes instead of just
one. UTF-8 is just a particular encoding of Unicode. I'm not sure where you
are seeing this, but that is what it is telling you. If you don't care about
the character encodings, then you can just disregard. The folks who use this
are just more internationally aware. :-)
