unhealthy spluttering noise at startup

Recently when I turn my PC on, I've been get an unhealthy wheezing and
spluttering noise as if ithe PC is struggling to get started, a little
bit like the noise a car sometimes makes when you try to start it on a
cold day. After a minute or so it settles down and it doesn't seem to
affect how the PC boots up.

Is this something I should be worried about ?

I built the PC myself, just over a year ago. All I've done so far to
try to sort the problem out is open up the case and fiddle around with
the wires.

That is just the lung cancer you gave it by smoking when using it.

Hard to be sure since its hard to say from your description what is making that noise.

I guess you could describe a failing fan bearing like that.

Try sticking something insulating in the power supply fan to stop it
from spinning and see if that stops the noise. Dont stop if for long,
just enough to see whether its that particular fan making that noise.

Do the same with any other case fans if there are any others.

Dont try it with the cpu fan.

Its likely a fan bearing problem because it wouldnt go
away so reliably if it was the hard drive recalibrating.
 
It sounds like either a cooling fan or a harddrive having difficulty
spinning up to speed.

Probably bearings in a fan wearing out. Next time you go to turn it on, take
the side cover off and see if you can determine which fan it is.
