Hi, I hope someone can help me. I just installed a SATA drive (Maxtor)
as a storage device. I also have two IDE drives - one with XP.
Everything seemed to go well except for a new optical device showing up
that I don't have (and never did). My actual DVD burner is still there
and operating properly. The old and new hard drives are there and
working properly. The drive is explained as a scsi cdrom device,
a347scsi scsi controller. I have disabled it and deleted it, but every
time I restart XP it is back!! I didn't see anything in the BIOS, but
I wasn't sure where to look. Help!! Thank you.

Your SATA controller is probably using SCSI emulation, reporting to Windows
that it is a SCSI controller. Another possibilty is some CD burning software
installs a virtual CD device. Does the following look familiar?

Thank you so much Kerry. It was a virtual drive. I have it turned off
now and everything is hunky dory.
