My laptop running xp prof will just turn off without
notice not shut down just black out. It is a software
problem as hardware has been checked. I have tried most
things such as system restore and have reinstalled
windows however it still happens. Mainly when installing
news programs or running virus check etc. I have had a
successful run with the virus check so the computer is
clean but how do I stop it short of reformating my hard
disk and reinstaling everything which I would rather not
do?

Hi

Go to event log and see for any warning messages
Post back what you have seen in the event logs

BTW, how long you can restart windows after the black out and how long your laptop can run before the black out
If it can run for several hours and then black out but you cannot restart the computer immediately, I would think for hardware/heat problems. Make sure the ventilation duct is not blocked and the cooling fan is running smoothly
