Unexpected Shut-Down

I don't know how long ago this problem began, but I first started noticing it
when I tried running my anti-virus scanner on my computer. Twenty minutes
into the scan, my computer would completely shut down. (Not go into
hibernation.) I made sure my power cables were connected. I think last week
was the last time I was able to complete a full virus scan. I thought it
might've been a program error, but I tried using online virus and computer
scans and had the same results. I'm very worried it could be a virus, but I
don't know because I haven't been able to run a virus scan or any kind of
computer scan without having it completely shut down. Could it be a memory
problem?

I have an HP Pavilion ze 1230 using Windows XP. I've looked at the online
shutdown troubleshooting guide that was linked from a previous post. I
haven't found anything that resembles the kind of problem I have.

Boot into safe mode and run a full system scan.
