Unending hard disk activity

As of two weeks ago my hard disk drive has become
exceptionally busy all the time. I can hear a lot of
clicks and things like a heavy search.

I have Symantec anti-virus, very much up-to-date.

Is Windows XP doing this? Is this some unadvertised
activity?

If your "Symantec anti-virus" is Norton 2004 then it is very much more
likely to act like a virus than an anti-virus. That could be at
least part of your problem.
