My machine is dual booted with W 2000 (C drive) and XP (D drive). I want to
free up some HD space by getting rid of W 2000 (C), but my boot sector is on
that drive. Is it possible to move the boot sector to D and delete C without
screwing up my machine? I have tried this before without moving it and I was
in REINSTALL heaven.

Thanks in advance.

No, the boot sector will always be on the boot drive. You can simply remove
the WINNT folder for the Windows 2000 install, and any other folders on that
drive that you don't need, to free up space. You could also use a 3rd party
program such as BootIt Next Generation or Partition magic, to resize the old
Win2K partition and make it considerably smaller, then enlarge the XP
partition.

Than can I delete W 2000 (keeping the boot sector on C), then merge D and C
together?

Not easily, since you'll cease to have a D: drive, and XP and all of the
programs installed under it thinks that XP is installed on D:
