Underscoring

Forgive the newbie question, but I want to create a form which has
cells underscored.

Across several cells, I have a long underscore leading up to a cell in
which I want to enter a number. I want the cell itself also to be
underscored. I want the entire cell showing the underscore both when
the cell is blank (has no number entered) and after a number is entered.

When I set this up, my problem occurs when a number is entered into the
cell. The number itself is underscored, but the leading blanks in the
cell are not.

Can this be done?

Eldritch, how about a bottom border rather than an underscore? A bottom
border will always show.

Select the cell(s) and Format > Cells > Border, then set it up.

I would do it using the Drawing Toolbar and a line across the bottom of the
cell.

OR just place a border line at bottom of cell(s).
