When we set users to have a mapped drive on our server it
does not connect or is spuratic when we use the server
name instead of the IP address. Can anyone help with
this? Not sure if it is a DNS issue or what.

Are you getting any events logged?
Are you pointing only to your internal DNS server on all clients and
servers?
You cannot use your ISP's DNS in any NIC because it cannot resolve your
local domain.
Configure your local DNS as per step3 of this KB article for internet
