when bootup and get a blue screen with the above message. Have already tried
booting up with xp disk and going to repair then c:/ running fixboot, have
also tried chkdsk, and fixmbr. Any other suggestions?

Can you connect it as a slave drive to a different hard drive and run a
disk repair that way? Or at least listen for the sounds that it
making. If it sounds like a turn blinker, it's toast...

With the XP CD you can also go to install a fresh copy of windows and
it will prompt you to repair, that is a more complete repair from what
I have found...

Steve;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at both
ends.
Laptop/Portables:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download
their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay software
which is not needed anyway.
