UNBELIEVABLE XP and Win2K/98 file sharing mess

I see post after post after post here, everyone with the same problem,
nobody with a definitive answer. Microsoft technical notes not providing a
fix either (at least not in my case). I find it UNBELIEVABLE that a new XP
machine can't gracefully join an existing peer-to-peer network of Win2K and
Win98 machines. What were they thinking? That nobody uses peer-to-peer file
sharing? Is it just a ploy to get everyone to upgrade to WinXP? In any case,
I think Microsoft has taken a big step backwards here. I have wasted a lot
of time trying to fix this problem.

I've written a web page that should help you get everything working:

Greetings,

Thanks to Steve for the link, but this doesn;t help me out much, unless I
want to spend a lot of time understanding what all the terminology means.
For example, I don;t know how to "unbind" file sharing from a protocol.
After years of working with computers, and getting by quite nicely, I am
tired of fooling around with these things and in this sort of simple matter
I want to click my way to success in a few minutes and get on with my real
job! I am logged as administrator. I have every computer using the same
workgroup name. I have disabled simple file sharing on the XP machine. I
have installed NetBEUI on the XP machine. I have installed NetBIOS on the XP
machine. I have disabled the XP firewall (although I wish I could simply
tell the firewall "trust my other machines, don't trust anyone else"). I
have not run the Network Setup Wizard on the other machines. For now I will
get by with GoToMyPC file transfers and forget about getting peer-to-peer
working until we finally upgrade the other machines to XP.
