Unallocated disk in Win2000 Prof

Hi:
I've just noticed that on my win2000 Prof machine, the C: drive is 4GB's and
there is 8GB unallocated. I see that thru the disk manager. How do I use
the unallocated? My first strategy was to partitioned it, and then call it
I: drive, but notice that I need to format the I: drive first before it can
be used. Am unsure whether to do this, as I don't want the *whole* disk
formatted.

Or is there a better strategy?? Is there a better way for me to use the
unallocated 8GB? Can I increase the C: drives allocation??
This particular machine is notoriously slow -
Any advise greatly appreciated.

I believe you can only use/increase yr C drive to utilise the 8gb with a
third party App eg Partition Magic - without a completete format/clean
install
With a 4gb C drive and presumably win2K loaded on, its probably virtually
full with a v.small page file which would go someway to explaining its
slowness.

Liz,

What you started to do was correct. To use that space you create a
partition and then format it. Formatting is per partition and will not do
anything to drive C. You can't enlarge drive C to use the space without a
3rd party program.

Are you able to advise on a 3rd party program???

*IF* I can increase the size of my C: drive, is it a fair expectation to
assume that it would spped up. I hear lots of paging ... etc.
thanks

rights.

I have never used any of them but an example is Partition Magic. Any of
that software is going to run you at least $40 - $50.

A further point, if you have a second drive, either install any apps, using
custom install, to second hd and or keep data on the second. That way if you
have to format/reinstall Win to C your data will remain

Yes, it should speed up. Also look at your memory. I went from 256 to 1
gig and its a whole new machine now - lots of speed
