If I open a message on computer with Vista it stays in my 'in box' and I can
view same message on another computer running XP. However, if I open message
with computer running XP, I am unable to view message on computer running
Vista. Any ideas?

On the computer running XP do you have it set to remove the message after
downloading?

Yes, it's no mystery, your Vista Mail program is set to leave a copy of the
email on the server and not delete it but the mail program on the XP pc is
set to delete the email from the mail server after it is sent to your pc.
If your running OE on your XP box just click on Tools, Accounts and click
the Mail tab. Select your mail account and click properties, click the
Advanced tab and you'll see the Delivery option at the bottom.

Just got laptop with Vista and this was a worry I had. Fixed before I
started. Thanks for the easy fix. Most helpful. Is there an easy way to
get old messages sent over from pc outlook express?

To move your old messages you'll need to copy all your .dbx files from OE
from the old pc to the new. The should be located in C:\Documents and
Settings\your login name\Local Settings\Applications Data\Identities\very
long number\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Once you have that folder on your
Vista machine, you can click File, Import, Messages, OE6, from store folder
and then navigate to where you copied the OE folder.

Barry meant to have the messages deleted from the server after downloading
to your computer. It is usually set that way, and should be changed so that
later accesses to the server can also get the messages. Be sure to pick some
time period after which to delete them from the server, or you will keep
getting the same messages over and over till the server mailbox is filled,
and it refuses to take more mail. You need to make sure each machine that
accesses your email account is set to leave the messages on the server after
downloading, but to remove them after some useful time period to keep them
from piling up.
