i can't open recent history folders (today, last week, etc) - i've
tried approaching it from the viral perspective and also disabling
third-party extensions... to no avail. earlier history folders open
properly - any help would be great.

Hi,
First...
The ActiveX filter of McAfee (and possibly other) anti-virus programs can
interfere with the history function of IE. Just disable the ActiveX filter.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819257

Next... Try deleting the History folder for the affected user account. A new
one will be create on restart.

The procedure [Windows XP]
You can't see your History folder when logged in as yourself- even if hidden
and system files are visible. You will have to login as another user with
admin privileges.

Make sure that you can see hidden files (Folder Options> View) Then
login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's
default administrator account (startup in safe mode) and delete the affected
History folder from Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and
Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\History]

Hi,
This free program will allow you to save History:
IEHistoryView (NirSoft) http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/iehv.html

Corruption of the History folder is not uncommon. Deleting it will probably
resolve this problem.

don - thank you, i've downloaded the program and am taking a look at
it. it only has folder to may 17 2006 - it seems that what's after
this is the "corrupted" files - i guess explorer hasn't even been
documenting the history (or they're corrupted for all viewers)? is
there any way i can get these files and the page in question before
deleting? perhaps another program, an online "retriever" of sorts...?

perhaps i can't and i'll just have to delete it all... thanks for your
help again, cheers.

Hi,
If IEHistoryView isn't finding recent history and you can't see it through
IE, I think you'll just have to delete the History folder and start over.
It's sometimes recommended that you limit the History to 15 or 20 days.
That's just an arbitrary number, but the principle is that a larger History
folder may be more prone to corruption.
