i am running windows 98 and have a relatively new problem
when it comes to viewing certain web pages. i often see a
red 'x' in a small box where a graphic should be. i know
this is not uncommom, but it has become an almost constant
problem for me lately (such is the case with this
microsoft page right now as a matter of fact). if i clear
my history, do a disc cleanup and run a scan disc it will
be ok for a few minutes (usually), but after that it is
bad again. another problem that i am having is constant
pop-ups all of a sudden (last 6 months or so). i cannot
help but think that that is part of the problem. does
anyone have any suggestions about both or either of these
problems? i have tried to d/l a pop-up stopper but it
freezes up the pc - plus it does not really 'stop' the pop-
ups, only makes it so i don't have to see them. if the
pop-ups are part of what is causing my other problem i am
sure a pop-up stopper would be ineffective. any
suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

Robin, it does sound as if you may have adware parasites. Check out the
first page below to help stop them creeping in behind your back (most of
them will have to ask in future if you make these changes) and then see
AdAware and SpyBot pages for utilities to remove any that are there. Tackle
this first and see if the red x problem persists. You will need to take your
time and read the instructions for both Adaware and SpyBot and don't just
let them kill everything off first run... you can always do it again... some
programs won't work without the associated "Parasite". Don;t be intimidated,
just allow yourself plenty of time
