I inheritated a computer that has XP Pro SP2. I have tried changing the
Start Menu to use the Standard XP view, but is still shows as the "classic
look" I have done virus/spyware checks and cleaned up a bunch of
stuff...not sure if anything got removed that may affect this or not! Any
help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Define "classic look". Either it's the Classic Start Menu or it isn't.

What about Themes? Stuck in Classic View?

SWAG: Make sure that the Themes service is set to Automatic and running.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Themes | Click the V next to Startup type |
Select Automatic | Click the Apply button | Click the Start button |
When the Themes service has started, click OK | Close Services

If you are using Home Edition however that
won't be possible obviously.

It is possible in XP Home with a registry setting.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoSimpleStartMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = default
1 = force classic menu

Define "classic look". Either it's the Classic Start Menu or it isn't.

Meaning when I mark the option for "Start menu" nothing changes. It still
displays as if I still have "Classic Start Menu" marked.

I'll check the Services like you suggested...don't have the machine with me
right now.

see original post...I am using Pro!

It is possible that there is a Policy in effect or a registry setting
forcing the Classic Start Menu. Is the Start Menu choice grayed
out/unavailable?

Look here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top.

167. Force Classic Start Menu - Undo

Click on Undo.

classicmenuundo.reg is the file that you want.
---

Or if XP Pro you can use Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |

Navigate to >>>

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\
Force Classic Start Menu
Set to Not configured.
-----

And/or check these registry settings...

Force Classic Start Menu
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er
Value Name: NoSimpleStartMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = default
1 = Force Classic Start Menu

Disables the new simple Start menu and forces the Classic Start Menu.
