OK, I have a hp pavilliona1642x computer I bought last fall, since then
I've
upgraded to windows vista using the upgrade cd sent to me from hp. They
also
sent a disc with drivers which I installed also. I had Stronghold 2 and
Sid
Meiers Pirates installed on my computer and I could play them just fine
but
now when I put the disk in it brings up the autoplay menue and I push play
and nothing happens, I receive a message saying to insert the original
disk.
-- I've gone to HP website and downlaoded all the firmware upgrades
and
nothing changed. I then went to thier troubleshooting website and whent
through 6 out of 7 tests for the cd/dvd drive. Number 7 being use
systemrestore which I am debating using.
Dano
Should I go through this long process? Or is there some stupid setting
that I changed accidentally?
Ok Dan, the problem definition is clearer. To summarize, it's an HP
computer originally with the XP OS. Two games were installed and working
fine. To run them you must also insert the CD and and play from the CD.
You upgraded the system to Vista with the HP upgrade disk and installed
Vista drivers from the drivers disk. Since that time when you insert the
game CD (is it CD or DVD?) it gives an error message, saying to insert the
original disk.
Is this correct?
If so here are some questions. Does the drive work for other CDs (DVDs)?
Have you been able to install programs from CD? What about audio CDs? Can
it read data CDs / DVDs? Is there more than one CD/DVD drive? If so does
the same error occur in both drives? If the drive(s) otherwise work ok then
the problem is with those games. If they don't work for installing programs
or reading audio or data CDs then it's a hardware/software (registry) issue.
If it's a problem only with these games have you tried uninstalling /
reinstalling the games?
Have you checked with the game authors (on their web site or with tech
support) to see if they are Vista compatible? Are there any patches needed
to run in Vista?
I don't know if a system restore would help. Restore to what point in time?
If they never worked after the Vista upgrade then I don't see where a
restore will help.
You could also post to the games newsgroup to see if anyone is familiar with
running those games on Vista.
